Beside the Puerta de los Leones that flanks the entrance to Chapultepec, a bronze eagle spreads its wings in tribute. It is the monument to Escuadrón 201 — the men who, in the middle of the Second World War, crossed the ocean to fight for the freedom of a distant people.

This chapter began with a national wound: in 1942, Axis submarines sank the Mexican oil tankers Potrero del Llano and Faja de Oro in the Gulf of Mexico. Faced with the aggression, the country abandoned its neutrality and formed the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force. Legendarily known as the “Aztec Eagles”, these volunteers spent months in hard training in the United States to master the powerful Thunderbolt fighters. The group carried the distinction of being the only Mexican military force to fight outside its own territory in contemporary history.

They left the sun of Mexico for a sky at war. Arriving in the Philippines in 1945 — a nation kin by history and Hispanic heritage — they flew high-risk missions over the islands of Luzon and Formosa. Side by side with the Allies, they carried out air sweeps and dive bombings, convinced that justice has no borders.

Five of them gave their lives in combat and never came home. They were young, determined, brave. They faced anti-aircraft fire and Japanese tenacity. They were not after personal glory, but after doing the right thing at a moment when the world was falling apart. Their triumphant return to the Zócalo was a celebration of tears and national pride. Today their memory lives on that pedestal and in every gaze lifted toward the sky, because the country is also honored when the fight is for peace, even in wartime.
